William Barak was an elder of the Wurundjeri people of southeastern Australia, whose portrait by Artur Loureiro hangs in the Museu Nacional de Soares dos Reis in Porto. Barak used diplomacy, teaching and painting to help his people adapt to colonization on their own terms, leaving an important legacy of his culture.
