Barbara Gittings (1932-2007) viveu numa época em que fazer parte da comunidade LGBT era muito difícil, pois significava carregar o estigma de ser "doente", estigma este que era apoiado e validado pelas organizações oficiais. A luta de Gittings focou-se na classificação da homossexualidade como uma orientação sexual e muitos dos progressos a nível da aceitação da comunidade LGBT não teriam sido possíveis sem ela.
